Cricketer-turned-politician Navjot Singh Sidhu met Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi in New Delhi in a meeting that sources said lasted 45 minutes on Monday.
The development fuelled speculations of an impending announcement of the leader joining the party.
Sidhu’s wife joined the party with former Shiromai Akali Dal leader Pargat Singh on November 28. She had hinted then that her husband would soon join her, but there has since been no official word, although speculations continued to swirl.
“The meeting is just between Sidhu and Rahul. A formal announcement is expected later this week,” sources said.
After his resignation from the Rajya Sabha in July, Sidhu quit the BJP on September 15 and floated the AeP with an eye on the Punjab assembly elections early next year.
